Description

Adult ADHD has traditionally been misunderstood or disregarded, yet with advances in the research leading to better etiological understanding and application of a wider variety of interventions, adults can now develop a more comprehensive and positive way to cope with and learn from their ADHD; an ADHD lifestyle, per se.

Trends in health and wellness over the last decade have increasingly embraced holistic views, comprehensive care, and consultative practice, creating a systemic view of individuals. Compartmentalization of the disorder is giving way to a greater understanding of the benefits of changing the overall lifestyle of the ADHD adult to not only assimilate the existence of pervasive symptoms but also create space for recognition of the benefits. Many adults coming into treatment are only too aware of their deficiencies, but are reluctant to accept they have strengths because of their ADHD. Reframing through the lens of an ADHD lifestyle aims to change that.

This course examines creating a sustainable lifestyle for ADHD using research derived from multimodal treatment options such as psychotherapy, behavioral/self-management skills, psychoeducation, self-advocacy, medication, and reasonable accommodations. This result is an improvement in self-esteem, productivity, organization, communication and follow-through. The important counterpoint to learning to work with symptom manifestation is recognizing mindful application of their strengths. It also creates the channels for communication of the eventual resistance and regression that so often defines living with ADHD. Paramount to creating a successful ADHD lifestyle is the ability to communicate when you are symptomatic, over-focused or coaching loved ones, the best ways to interpret behaviors and miscommunications.
Creating comprehensive treatment plans that combine collaborative practices among psychiatrists, therapists, coaches, and ancillary services is key to addressing ADHD in a successful manner.

Research shows the best treatment outcomes are more often obtained through combined treatments of alternative therapies, counseling, and medication.

Objectives for this 2-hour seminar include: 1.) Breaking down how adults obtain a diagnosis, 2.) Understanding the underlying subtleties of the diagnosis beyond the DSM-V, 3.) Helping adults accept their symptoms and challenges, 4.) Practical tools for healthy coping with symptoms, 5.) Identifying and embracing strengths, 6.) Developing self-advocacy to communicate in relationships and at work, 7.) Making peace with the past through EMDR or family therapy, and finally, 8.) Learning how to parent effectively with ADHD to create more consistency and less reactivity toward kids with ADHD

This seminar is for professionals, families, individuals, coaches, and anyone who wants a deeper, practical understanding of the subtleties of ADHD in adults and how to create a sustainable and fulfilling ADHD lifestyle.
