About
As Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Partnerships and Associate Professor of Philosophy and Social Justice, Julia van der Ryn champions a critical, asset-based approach to community engagement that foregrounds equity, reciprocity, and transformative academic partnerships.
Her advocacy for community-driven, participatory action research, community-engaged art and placemaking and collective response to urgent community needs is inspired by longstanding partnerships with Marin County organizations. Projects like Voces del Canal, Marin City Counts (a public art–based census awareness campaign), and co-creation of digital literacy and emergency rental assistance programming highlight her commitment to collaborative, culturally informed work grounded in community priorities. Julia's ongoing learning as a community-engagement practitioner is also reflected in her teaching.
