Abstract
While ISA gatherings are mostly about advancing scholarship, they also present an opportunity to generate conversations on teaching. However, most ISA panels on pedagogy are centered on experiences and practices that are common in the United States. As IR scholars, who teach courses on World Politics, we have both theoretical and practical reasons to engage in discussions on global frameworks for pedagogy. This panel aims to generate an international conversation on teaching centric institutions. Participants will explore questions related to their individual experiences at higher-education institutions around the world: What are the professional implications for working at a teaching centric institution? How do you balance responsibilities for teaching and research? What structural issues do you face as a teacher-scholar and how do you address them? What institutional incentives are in place to improve students’ experience? What kinds of support do faculty receive for creativity in pedagogy? What are the challenges for today’s students? Are they more engaged and prepared for classes, or less, and why? Finally, how can we internationalize our courses through collaboration? In short, this panel will have something for all teacher-scholars and should engage experienced instructors, early-career faculty and advanced graduate students.
